The AASSA-NAST PHL International Symposium on “Realizing the Full Cycle of Research and Development: From Bench to the Community” in conjunction with the AASSA Executive Board Meeting was held at Taal Vista Hotel, Tagaytay City, Philippines from September 21-23, 2017. The Symposium was co-organized by National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) in collaboration with the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA), supported by the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), Department of Science and Technology Philippines (DOST), Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) and Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD).

One of the emerging trends in science is Translational Research, designed to respond to societal needs. It was initially termed as, translational medicine, which is “the process of applying ideas, insights, and discoveries generated through basic scientific inquiry to the treatment or prevention of human disease”, facilitating the cascading of new knowledge s “from bench to bedside”.

Thus a science and technology agenda in the interest of society is now recognized as a vital component of development and sustainability. Not only should the agenda address the needs of development but its conveyance to the users must also be facilitated.

The Symposium was conducted to (1) scan the different disciplines of science to assess the best practices in translational research, (2) formulate appropriate interventions for the different science academies and the private sector to harness the modern tools of science for development and sustainability and (3) draft resolutions or a manifesto on translational research that may later on be submitted to concerned institutions/agencies both here and abroad.

The main themes of the Symposium are as follow:

  • Metrics for Success in Research Translation

  • Communications Strategy

  • Financing Mechanism for Translating Research

  • Agriculture and Biological Sciences

  • Translational Research through Science and Engineering Education

  • Translational Research in Health, Social Sciences, and Policy

A total of 19 lectures were given by the resources persons, 9 of which were delivered by resource persons from Australia, Korea, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Russia, Ghana, South Africa and Indonesia.
