The International Training Workshop on Integrated Risk Assessment Methods Using Spatial and Social Vulnerability Data for Disaster Risk Reduction was held at the Sanya Campus of the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences in China. The training workshop was jointly organized by Digital Belt and Road Program (DBAR), the CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence on Space Technology for Disaster Mitigation (SDIM), Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA), InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR), IRDR China National Committee (IRDR CHINA), International Society of Digital Earth (ISDE), and Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI).

 

With the objective of strengthening national research capacities to enable informed decision-making in different aspects of disaster risk reduction, the workshop will provide a scientific and practical guide on DRR to the participants from developing countries along the Belt and Road.

 

16 lectures were given by the trainer, who came from 8 different countries: China, Pakistan, United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, Sri-Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh. 22 participants from 15 developing countries including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, Rwanda, Thailand, Ethiopia, etc. attended the workshop.

 

AASSA-CAS Workshop Joint Workshop on Big Earth Data for Disaster Risk Reduction in Asia was hosted by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), and Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA), and jointly organized by SDIM and DBAR disaster working group. The main objectives of the workshop are as follows:

  • Share the experience of big Earth data applications for DRR

  • Identify the main challenges and bottlenecks in using and implementing various data in DRR application platform (e.g., web-platform)

  • Identify the priorities in terms of data integration/sharing policy with a focus on disaster risk reduction

  • Enhance cooperation between the big Earth data for DRR related community, the major Stakeholders and the User Communities


The workshop includes three sessions on introduction, Big Earth Data for Disaster Risk Reduction in Asia-Part I and Part II. A welcome dinner was hosted by AASSA on 14 December, and another dinner was kindly hosted by the SDIM.
