The AASSA International Symposium on “Global Health Issues in Asia” was held at the Emerald Hall, Hotel Interciti, Daejeon, Republic of Korea from October 19th to 21th, 2015, in conjunction with the AASSA Executive Board Meeting 2015. The symposium was organized by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) and the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA), and supported by the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP).

 

The aim of this symposium was to discuss on global health issues in Asia, mainly focusing the topics of personalized medicine, medical treatment against chronic diseases, emerging health issues in infectious diseases, insect-borne and parasitic diseases, and global issues in health and environment. Fourteen lectures were presented by invited speakers, of which ten were by international speakers and four were by Korean speakers. The international speakers were from Bangladesh, China, India, Israel, Malaysia, the Philippines, Russia and Sri Lanka.

 

The opening ceremony started at 2:30 PM, October 19, 2015 at the Emerald Hall, Hotel Interciti. Opening remarks was given by Jong-Yil Chai, who is the chair of Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and a director of Medical Sciences Division of KAST. Welcoming remarks was delivered by Khairul Anuar Bin Abdullah, as Co-chair of International Organizing Committee (IOC) and Treasurer of AASSA, Sung Hyun Park, as President of KAST, and Krishan Lal, as President of AASSA.

 

The symposium comprised six sessions totally, two sessions on October 19 and the other three sessions and also group discussion part on October 20. The topics of sessions are (1) Keynote speech; (2) Medical treatment against chronic diseases; (3) Emerging health issues in infectious diseases; (4) Current trends in insect-borne and parasitic diseases; (5) Global issues in health and environment; and (6) Group discussion.
